The Perfect Care Package for the Cheap Vegan in Your World

As a vegan on a budget, I know there is nothing better than getting a care package full of things that I really want but are just out of my price range. Here is a guide to making a healthy Cheap Vegan care package that’s sure to satisfy your favorite vegan.

Granola Bars
A convenient breakfast or in between meal snack that we just hate spending with our own dime. Luna and Clif bars are great because they’re all vegan and the flavors are amazing. Key Lime Pie, Carmel Nut, or White Chocolate Macadamia nut are just a few of the interesting flavors Clif offers that vegans usually can’t try.

Kale Chips
How did something made entirely of a garnish vegetable get so expensive? A gift of kale to the cheap vegan is a break from slow baking it ourselves.

Heat and Go Dinner
These Indian Dinners from Trader Joe’s are so good and so easy to make. Perfect for the vegan working doubles. Be sure to read the ingredients though, only the Punjab Choley is vegan.

Fancy Nut Butter
Specifically Justin's nut butters. These little single-serving packets are oh-so tempting every time you pass them at whole foods. The variety of flavors (all vegan) can't be beat making them the perfect treat!

That rhyme was totally unintentional…

High Quality Dark Chocolate
Fair trade, organic, dark chocolate can be a little pricier than an average Hershey bar. Nothing says “I love you”, like chocolate.

Granola
Next to tofu, granola is probably the most famous of vegan staples, but it can get pricey compared to regular cereals. It’s light-weight and can actually hold your friend over for a week of breakfast, making it a thoughtful and practical care package accessory.

Dried Soup Mix
Another light weight complete meal that you can send in the mail. Soup is the perfect comfort food sure to warm their tummy and their heart.

A Homemade Pastry
No care package would be complete without something homemade. Use www.vegweb.com to find vegan recipes for any treat!

A Lil Somthing Extra
At the end of the day, a care package is just another way to show your love. Adding a personal touch like a hand written note, an old picture, or an inside joke will mean more than all the granola and chocolate money can buy.

Quick Cooking Tips for Dried Beans
Soak overnight - this will prep your beans for cooking and also leech out some of the chemicals that give you gas.
Add Other Ingredients - Beans and rice are good, but beans, peppers, onions, garlic, celery, etc. etc… is better!
Don’t add salt until the very end!!! - This rule is super important! Adding salt before the beans have softened can make for gritty beans.

Rocket to Healthy Eating!Thoughtful gifts for thoughtful people
I recently was given a gift certificate to a vegan restaurant in LA called Sage. The gift came in a cute card with a personal message from the sender wishing me a happy holidays. It was printed from home on a piece of paper and it told me to go to the Gift Rocket website to redeem my gift. Once I got there I realized that this wasn’t your ordinary gift card, and that I could receive the amount on the card by direct deposit, check, credit card, or pay pal with no obligation to follow the sender’s suggestion.
While I personally will still take a visit to Sage, I thought this was a great way to give a thoughtful yet not limiting monetary gift. With Gift Rocket, you still get to show you put thought into your present but you’re not confining the recipient to spend it all in one place.
Just wanted to share this super cool service as a great way to promote the gift of healthy eating for any cheap vegan!

Easiest Left Over Tofurkey Soup Recipe Ever!
One of the best parts of Thanksgiving is left overs! But when you start to get to your last leg of left overs it can be hard to come up with a real meal, so we must (as we often do) turn to soup.
This recipe will be different for whatever left overs you have, but be adventurous!
I used:
peas
corn
kale
stuffing
gravy
tofurkey
pumpkin
Cut Tofurkey into bite-sized pieces and put in a deep pan or pot.
Cover with just enough water to graze the top of the ingredients.
Add whatever left overs you think would taste good together; mashed potatoes, gravy, rice, corn, peas, kale, squash, whatever!
Then I added pumpkin puree and some cold water mixed with corn starch to thicken it all up.
I heated this up to almost a boil, then poured it in my big red cup.
Then I threw some stuffing in the pan to heat it and then put the stuffing on top of the soup (as pictured above)
Enjoy by the fire (or if you’re like me, the radiator…)

Beyonce and Jay-Z Go Vegan!

For the next 22 days Beyonce and Jay-Z will be on a vegan diet. The rap mogul wrote on his site Life + Times"Psychologists have said it takes 21 days to make or break a habit. On the 22nd day, you’ve found the way."

I personally am a HUGE Beyonce and Jay-Z fan, but even if you aren’t, there’s no doubt this is going to make a big change in the way people look at vegans and the vegan diet. This super power of celeb-credibility is sure to boost the vegan reputation. I mean, who could disagree with Beyonce?!

Not only that, it will help reach many different demographics, many of which may not know any vegans, or even know what a vegan is. I hope this will be a big change toward a more positive perception of veganism.

I’m excited to see what happens after 22 days.
