I recently received a letter from a reader in Barcelona who asked about good cheap vegan eats in her city. I have been missing Barca a lot lately and I was happy to reminisce on all of the delicious food I was eating last year.
Hi!! I read you lived in Barcelona, and that’s where I live, so I was wondering if you could tell me some places with nice vegan food, I’m pretty new to this vegan thing :P
Cheap Vegan Barcelona
Sometimes it’s difficult to eat abroad, especially in a city like Barcelona where the main foods are cheese, dried ham, and seafood. Regardless, Barcelona is a huge international hub, and you can find some great hidden vegan treasures in Barca that meet the everyday backpacker’s nutritional and monetary requirements.
Carrer Escudellers 42, Plaéa George Orwell
Barcelona, Spain 08002
Cash onlyGopal is home to homemade burgers of all varieties, vegan bravas and croquettes, a daily menu that features foods you can’t find vegan in many Spanish restaurants, and an assortment of cakes and goodies that could easily lead you to go over budget if you’re not careful. This little treasure is almost always packed full of people nowadays. Seating is limited but there are plenty of beautiful fountain sides, benches, and curbs you can walk to in under 10 minutes.
Suggested Menu: Plato Unico (photo above) – 1 homemade burger patty of your choice w/ a generous side of patatas bravas or a super packed salad featuring garden veggies, sundried tomato patte, and guacamole.
Tasty Treat: chocolate glazed donuts, mmm…
CHEAP TIP: If you can find a seat for your plato unico, get it for there and you’ll get double the portion of sides.
Menjar Per Emportar (Doner Kebab)
Carrer dels Còdols, 7
Neighborhood: Barri Gòtic
While there are plenty of Doner Kebab joints in Barcelona this one is a hidden treasure and a godsend for the Cheap Vegan traveler. Faruk, the owner, is the kindest kebab wielder you’ll ever meet and he never forgets a face. This is a truly special place and a staple to the starving artists types in Gotico.
Suggested Menu: Arroz y Verduras (it’s a very large portion for only 4 euro!)
Tasty Treat: Grab a 25-cent Pakora para llevar or put it on top of your rice, be sure to ask for extra red sauce! Mmm…
Rambla, 91 08002 Barcelona, Spain
La Boqueria is the most famous farmers market in Barcelona. You can get anything here from Spanish olives, to exotic fruits, to goat heads… not that you’d really want a goat head…
Besides produce, there are lots of meals and restaurant stands inside. Many of the produce stands also sell fruit or salad plates. While there are many to choose from, I’ve found carts that offer a salad of your choice along with a fruit salad for 5 euro. This was perfect for a day out where you would need both breakfast and lunch. Big portions, fresh food, cheap price, can’t beat it!
Suggested Menu: Your choice of Salad and Fruit Salad combo meal
Tasty Treat: Exotic fruits, 1 euro fresh juices, or a nice baguette with Sundried tomatoes and olives
Telepizza is a fast food pizza chain that isn’t necessarily a spectacular Spanish meal to write home about, but it’s pretty good and every Tuesday you can get your own medium personal pizza for only 5 euro! Simply ask for your pizza sin queso and pick 4 veggies/sauces of your choice.
Suggested Menu: Pizza Tu Gusto on Tuesdays
CHEAP TIP: use the machine to order if you are not comfortable asking for a strange vegan pizza in Spanish. This can also help you bipass the line.
The Dog is Hot
Suggested Menu: The vegan dog (loaded with toppings, beware of messy deliciousness)
Suggested Menu: Menu Del Dia
Tasty Treat: Zumo Del Dia
Suggested Menu: Not unique to Barcelona but the all you can eat Falafel Salad/Pita is a great bargain!
(eat in and just keep going up to the salad bar to fill up)
Tasty Treat: Get a side of fries for an added treat!
Gelatii Di Marco (vegan gelato)
Llibreteria, 7, 08002 Barcelona, Spain
Suggested Menu: Vegan Chocolate Gelato w your favorite fruit gelato
CHEAP TRIP: Beware, the cones are unfortunately not vegan
